All About LACE FRONTALS & Why I Think They Are Overrated…

Are you thinking about getting a lace frontal? Have you gotten caught up in the hype and haven’t done your research? Well, this is what you need to know…

I will cover what I have learned from the many lace classes I have taken (including Tokyo’s), my experience with lace over the years and my recent experiences with frontals.

This is not to sway anyone from getting a frontal. It is just to tell you everything you need to know before you get to spending your money!

For those who don’t know, a frontal is basically a large closure. It covers the front of your hair from ear to ear. They range in size from 13×4-13×8.

Here is oneĀ before installation:

The purpose of the frontal is to protect your hair from damage while providing maximum versatility. It sounds AMAZING right? I mean, who wouldn’t want their hair to look like this:

11374410_1603636566570815_2089980751_n

YES, this is a frontal. NO, there is no leave out. YES, he handmade this wig. YES IT LOOKS LIKE THIS IS COMING STRAIGHT OUT OF HIS SCALP!!!

Pictured above is the LEGENDARY @TokyoStylez (touchedbytokyo.com). If you have never seen his work, you are missing out. He is da bomb! Annnnd I was blessed enough to take his one of his “Handz On” classes in ATL!

Now once you look at the top frontal stylists in the game right now, you will see that the installs/wigs they do are mostly “GLUELESS.” Which is true, but where most of you are getting confused is where you begin to associate “glueless” with “fully sewn.”Sometimes it may be fully sewn, but that is usually not the case.

Here are the common misconceptions made about frontals: Frontals last long; Frontals are easy maintenance; Frontals will save me money…NOPE!

People fail to realize that LACE IS VERY TEMPORARY and EXPENSIVE!Ā It is a give and take process.

  • If you want a lace closure (size 5×5, 4×4, 3×4, etc.), well you’re going to have to accept that a closure is the price of a bundle of hair, and it will NOT stay in place for the entire duration of your install (your hair GROWS and the closure grows with it; you will need retouches every 2-4 weeks).
  • If you want a lace frontal (size 13×4-13×8), you’re going to have to accept that it will usually cost you much MORE than bundle of hair, it will require LOTS of tweaking to look the slightest bit natural (bleaching, tweezing, tinting, trimming, etc.), and it will require WEEKLY maintenance/upkeep.

There is absolutely NO WAY in hell to get your frontal to look the one picturedĀ with just needle and thread!Ā A closureĀ will lay down without some sort of adhesive only from around the end of your eyebrow to the other end of your eyebrow, depending on your head shape. To get those side burns and have that lace frontal mesh to your scalp like that you’re 99.9% going to have to use an adhesive (which does not have to be lace glue).

There are many ways to install a frontal (sewin and wig). Here are the methods and the pros and cons of each:

  • ā€œGluelessā€ but with special product;
    • Pros: Easy at home fix,Ā rinses off with water, does not irritate skin or break the hair, Lace lays mesh with the skin;Ā product is used sparingly;
      • Most natural looking, give illusion that hair is coming from scalp
    • Cons: Lasts about 4-5 days at a time; Ā May break edges if your forehead isn’t big enough to place properly and if not removed properly.
  • Glued
    • Pros: Lasts the longest (tops 2 weeks), Lace lays mesh with the skin
    • Cons: Glue is messy, must come back for a retouch unless you can do it at home; Glue is known for irritating the skin and severely breaking off the edges.
  • Tape
    • Pros: Easy to redo at home, strong hold
    • Cons: Tape may irritate the skin; does not lay as flat as the others, may shine through the lace
  • NO Products
    • Pros: Does not use any product at all or elastic band, no breakage or irritation;
    • Cons: MUST come back for a retouch every 4-5 days; Entire frontal must be removed and reinstalled; WILL cause thinning of hair by the ear (the anchor braids) because of how much tension used to pull it flat; Will not get the full versatility of the frontal because the lace near the ear won’t lay as flat
  • Elastic Band
    • Pros: Does not use any product, lasts a little longer than the no product
    • Cons: Band can be uncomfortable (but can be adjusted), Client will not be able to achieve the side burns look (it will look unnatural around the ear area unless the client can maintain the baby hairs that are there to cover it.

I’m sure that sooner than later, some great stylists in the game are going to come up with better, longer lasting ways to install these.Ā

Now, in no way am I bad mouthing frontal stylists and specialists… I commend each and everyone of them for having the patience/talent to do these! And they end up looking GREAT! But, me personally…I think they are VERY overrated and complete hype.

FRONTALS ARE NOT FOR EVERYBODY!!!Ā Not even myself! It is OKAY to settle for a closure. Those are just as good looking! (I have a slight bias because I specialize in closures myself).

Do NOT get a frontal if:

  • You don’t want to pay for maintenance or upkeep. You’re gonna be hurt when you have to keep returning to your stylist. IT IS NOT YOUR STYLIST’s FAULT! Again, lace is very TEMPORARY!
  • You don’t want to spend money on the hair, the frontal, the customization of the frontal, and the install.
  • You have a small forehead. If your hairline sits closer to your eyebrows then it will either look like a wig or you will have to sit the frontal on your hairline which isn’t too pretty either.
  • You don’t want your stylist to use products or adhesive and you think you’ll get 100% versatility, completely protected hair, and a flawless lace install that looks like your real hair for longer than a few days.
  • Most darker skinned women (like myself) can’t seem to get lace to match ourĀ skin tone well enough to make it look as flawless as lighter skinned females. (@allureandmore sells pre-tinted lace so it will be closer to your skin tone.)

Frontal wig (no leave out) I made in Tokyo’s class:

FullSizeRender 2

Looks like it is mine right? Perfect lighting. But in the wrong lighting, it could look something like this:

NOT CUTE! I WON’T RISK IT! LOL!Ā

Good places to get lace frontals and wigs:Ā pinkcouturehair.com (the frontals Tokyo uses and the one for my wig), whitelabelhair.com, missyhairboutique.com, Ā glamlacewig.fr

I hope you have been well informed of the current frontal trend…if you have any questions I’d love to answer them! Leave them and other comments below. Thankssss šŸ™‚ -Yas

  1. Sooo I was pretty excited about trying a frontal sewin. I’m military and I Was excited about being able to pull my hair back without leave out and how natural it looked. I definitely dont have time to see a stylist every week or so, but I don’t want to keep putting heat on my hair. Would I be able to pull my hair up or back with a closure and it look natural?

    1. Yes ma’am! Go check out my instagram page (@hairsewperfect) or the few pictures at the bottom of the home page of my blog to see! It is exactly what you’re looking for! It is a closure, no leave out, no tape/glue/adhesive/product…just slip the unit on and off or get it installed that way. A unit would benefit you better though. You could just get it sewn down whenever you need if you desired to have it sewn. It is secure!

  2. Hey I’m slightly confused when you say glueless!?? You said it’s easy to fix at home and comes off with water but what product are you talking about? Is it a product that we can put on similar to lace glue or something?

    1. Yes it is a special gel. Applied the same way as lace glue. It has the sticky qualities of glue, but isn’t supposed break your edges or break your skin out like glue. My experience with it was a little different though. I’m currently growing my edges out, but that was only because I have a sort of low hairline and I had to tack it right at my hairline for it to look right. It doesn’t last as long as glue though. I payed good money to learn what the actual product is though! šŸ™‚

  3. Hello I wondering is it good to get a lace frontal quick weave? Or will I still have to maintain more work and come out more money.

  4. I only have seen a few stylists install those. I wouldn’t recommend it because the stylist will likely charge at least $100 for it. You’ll have to buy a good frontal ($120) & some hair. If you want hair that’s going to match the frontal then it’s going to cost a good bit as well. Only for it to get cut up. Plus it’s only a 2 week style with a frontal maintenance.

  7. Hi,
Thanks for sharing good info! I ordered my frontal last year and I’ve tried the elastic band and it was too tight and tried sewing some of it down, but I just can’t get my front to be really flat. I bought some adhesive tape from beauty supply store and my edges are finally growing back. I was thinking of using some protection gel on my edges before I try the tape. Do you think it will work! Thx

    1. Thank you! And it is a hassle getting that thing to lay flat without tearing your edges out! Yes you should use some sort of protectant before you use the tape! Let me know how it goes!

I thought this was possible, as I’d seen on Utube videos..well all I can say is it’s NOT!! The stylist that tried to accommodate me did the best she could considering my NO adhesive request, but eventually I gave in to the lace glue because it wouldn’t lay flat. Only lasted about a week, due me constantly working out, but thankfully it didn’t take out my edges. Next we tried like a double sided strip, this was the worse, again only lasted about a week…I’d rather the glue though cause I think I may have lost some edges this times. Wish I would have seen this before and you’re right frontals are OVERRATED!! Thanks for sharingšŸ˜˜šŸ˜˜

  13. Hi! Just discovered your blog, great info! I was planning on buying some bundles and a frontal. I typically would just made a wig with a closure but wanted to try a frontal. Because hair is an investment, do you think it would be better to just make wig with a closure rather than a frontal (in terms of longevity)? My wigs usually last me about a year…I’m so worried about wasting money on a frontal.

Thanks in advance for you advice!

    1. Hello! Thank you so much for reading! I’m glad you enjoyed! I think a closure will always outlast a frontal! Simply because you have to pluck, bleach, and sometimes tint the frontal which will cause it to shed a lot faster over time. I don’t think frontals are ever a good investment!

Last night I cut it closer to the hairline and it looked great again but now the next day I can see my lace line again. I worry if I keep cutting it everyday I’ll end up with no hair! Any tips? I have trouble making my baby hairs lay down as well and I think that would help.

    1. Did you only use a needle and thread? No adhesive? If so that’s going to continue happening unless you re-do the frontal. With adhesive you can just lift it and reapply the adhesive without having to remove the frontal at all. You also have to be careful to not break your skin out or your edges off with the adhesive.

    1. Hello!! It would be better for you to get a wig. It will last longer than a sewin, lay flatter than a sewin, and it’s also reusable (perk)! With a sewin, you would have to get a touch up every week or so vs re-shifting the wig!

  16. Good article! I make a “lace front wig” using a 13×4 frontal, 3 bundles of hair, wig cap, and a carefully measured elastic band that I cut to fit. I like this home-made approach. That way I don’t have to worry about the frontal ever growing out – the headband causes just enough tension to lay it flat without it feeling to tight. Plus I can take the wig on and off everyday and not have to sleep on my hairstyle. As an added bonus, it’s much easier and faster to slap on a wig than it is to re-install sew-ins. I do sew-ins sometimes and I still like them too.

I am a chic tomboy lol and that maintenance every 2-4 wks is not for me ma’am. I tried a closure once but would rather use them for my wigs instead of my installs. 18. So, I love the tips and advice you’ve given here as I’m looking for something to last me from the 27th of this month (Dec) until mid January (16/18th or so). I was thinking that a weave with my hairline left out would be my best bet. But, my stylist has been raving about full sewins or little hair left out. I never use heat on my hair and have natural kinky curls that are just above my shoulder. I want a protective style that won’t break off my edges or damage the rest of my hair while giving me more length and versatility. I haven’t had any weave since Jan 2014, would you suggest that I just do a partial with the hairline out instead of lace sew in or also glue? I’m only planning to do it for the one time from the 27th – 16th/18th and want it to look as natural as possible.

  19. Okay so I’m in college and I figured I would try a frontal. The girl customized my frontal and I went to get it I stalled and it looked great until I went outside and saw it was completely different color that my skin (I’m a darker complexion)..so I went back to her and she told me to put makeup on it. Also, this morning I woke up and it was sliding which I know is supposed to happen but do I use the got2b glue that she used when she was installing it or will it be too much? Also, I’m pretty sure that I will be taking this out within the next week or so..but I don’t want any leave out because my hair will be damaged from me flat ironing it so much since I am natural. Do I need to get a closure and if so how do I go about making them look less fake because I hate that part in the middle of the hair it just looks really fake to me

    1. Hey!! Thanks for reading!
Yes, you should definitely go with a closure. Bleach the knots, tweeze the part. There’s plenty of videos on youtube on how to customize your closure and make it look natural! They last much longer and (in my opinion) look much better than frontals. They are definitely less maintenance. Whatever you do, don’t relax your hair or give it heat damage! There are stylists around that should be able to do a proper closure! If not, Youtube (even my channel, yasminereigns) will help you!
      Thanks again sista

    Like

    1. Hello! If you get it sewn without glue, you will need maintenance by the week but it is healthier for your hair. If you get glue, you will need maintenance probably every 8-9 days, but it will put your edges/skin at higher risk of breakage. Either way it goes, you’ll need a plethora of maintenance to keep it looking good.

    Like

    1. Thank you so much! So sorry for the late response. I do not suggest a frontal for that because the sweat will cause the frontal to shift and move. Usually they are glued down so the sweat will cause the glue to melt off! The best option would be a FULL sew-in. no edges out or anything. with a solid closure. You could also get a wig and remove it when you work out so you won’t have to worry about the style sweating out and wasting your money. You would also be able to get to your scalp and let it breathe!
